This book explains the role and limitations of liberalized international trade via-avis the global environment and sustainable development. A distinguishing feature of this book is its integration of trade, environment and development perspectives for operationally meaningful policy purposes. The main issues considered include analysis of the global trade regimes; interrelationships with existing multilateral environmental agreements; institutional mechanisms governed by the World Trade Organization; and a framework for pragmatic reforms. The first part of the book deals with a critical review of the economic foundations of traditional trade theories, analysis of the complementarity of trade and the environment and imports on sustainable development. The second part analyses the framework of the WTO, its provisions concerning environmental protection, and mechanisms of the settlement of trade disputes. The final part of the book integrates environmental considerations with the working of the global trade mechanisms governed by the WTO, and suggests possible reforms in its Articles of Agreements and in the practice of economic and environmental principles.
