ADHD : helping parents help their children
This guidebook is intended to help clinicians understand these differences, to communicate this understanding and appreciation to parents, and to help parents make creative use of their differences and conflicts in order for them to work together to be more effective parents to their children with ADHD. Just as special skills are needed by clinicians working with children and families coping with ADHD, special skills are needed to help clinicians enable parents to develop those skills and address the different needs and perspectives of mothers and fathers that can create confusion, disagreement, misunderstanding, and conflict. These differences can also be used to find creative ways to parent the ADHD child cooperatively. This guidebook then, is designed to help clinicians effectively help parents of ADHD children to acquire skills that will help their children, to help these parents become more skilled at helping themselves and helping their spouses or ex-spouses, to help mothers and fathers appreciate what is unique to each of their perspectives and understand what is unique to their spouse's or ex-spouse's perspective, and to help them find creative ways to use this knowledge to work together for the benefit of their ADHD child.
