Since the 1997 crisis, Indonesia?s export performance has been disappointing. Increased competition from countries such as China is part of the picture, but domestic causes are mostly to blame for lagging exports. To boost exports, Indonesia should be working on maintaining a stable and competitive exchange rate, reducing costs, improving the investment climate, and increasing access to other countries markets. In the longer run, Indonesia needs to adjust its export structure toward higher value-added goods. The government should develop a strategy that supports this through improving infrastructure, enhancing skills, and upgrading technology. It should avoid protectionist measures that benefit few, and hurt competitiveness, consumers, and the poor.
