The seaweed industry provides a large variety of products used for human consumption as food (75% of the consumption), cosmetics/pharmaceutics industries and as a fertiliser. There are three main kinds of seaweeds : Brown, green and red. Red and green seaweeds are relatively smaller than brown seaweed which can reach an incridible size : 20m long. They can also be called macro-algae; either they grow naturally (wild seaweed) or in farms (aqua culture). Historically, seaweeds use can be traced up to 4th century in Japan and 6th century in China, which explains why these countries are among the leaders of the seaweeds production/exports/consumption.
