Mimika Butterflies

The butterfly fauna of New Guinea is quite distinct, with many endemic species, some of which are among the world's largest and most beautiful. Because the island is so large many butterfly populations have been iso lated by distance and by the terrain, leading to considerable regional variation and to the development of different sub-species. The mimika area, adjoining a huge national wildlife reserve, is ideally suited to the study of a small cross section of the island's rich insect life. Collecting in the broader area began a long time ago and so most species are already well documented in the scientific literature but outside of these journals nothing has been published specifically on the butterfly fauna of Papua(formerly Irian Jaya)and many subspecies endemic to the area are not illustrated in the few books that cover the wider New Guinea region. This book is an attempt to provide a strating place for those who wish to study the butterflies of this region. It would not be possible to produce such a work without the manny years of work by my friend Norris Pangemanan who has for more than twenty years devoted much of his spare time to exploring the region to discover its butterfly secrets..
