Singapore Supporting Industries 2008/2009

As Singapore depends heavily on trade to drive its economy, it is constanly striving to wprk towards a liberalised global trading environment. But while it has given the World Trade Organisation (WTO) its full support, it also believes that bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) can help quicken the pace of trade liberalisation. It has thus signed FTAs with New Zealand, Japan, the European Free Trade Association, Australia, The US, India, Jordan, South Korea, Brunei, Chile And Panama. The following are key features of the various FTAs that have come into effect so far. Singapore has committed to granting zero-tariff treatment on all imports from Japan as of entry into force of the agreement, whilst Japan has increased its zero-tariff commitments from the current 34 percent (under WTO) to 77 percent of total tariff lines. Out of 6,938 zero-tariff concessions accorded by Japan, 6,928 will only 10 petrochemical products will be liberalised over a period of time.
