Real GDP growth will slow over the forecast period, as gold production is expected to continue to fall because Mali's three main mines have slipped into long-term decline. In addition, the global economic downturn will reduce remittances from abroad as well as demand for the country's export commodities, with the exception of gold. Nevertheless, assuming favourable weather conditions, the agricultural sector will continue to perform well, particularly food crops and livestock production, as the government has invested heavily to reduce the country's dependence on food imports. The structural problems at the national marketing board that have caused major falls in cotton output in the past two years will remain, but we expect the sector to recover slightly in 2010 owing to the subsidies that the government has planned to provide for agricultural inputs. Growth in manufacturing, trade and services will be affected by the global downturn, and the weakening of European consumer spending power will reduce tourist arrivals, especreased 2009. Constuction will remain one of the main drivers of growth as increased donor funds help the government to step up public investment in infrastructure. As a result of these trends, we forecast that real GDP growth will slow from an estimated 5.1% in 2008 to 3% in 2009 and to 3.5% in 2010.
