The performance of the Greek economy was weak in the 1980s, with annual real GDP growth averaging just 1.7%. In 1991-95 it fell to 1.2%, with a contraction of 1.6% in 1993 during the Europe-wide recession. During the period of convergence there was sustained recovery, with the Greek economy growing faster than that of its EU partners; in 1996-2000, for example, growth averaged 3.4% per year. Since entry into the euro area, the Greek growth rate has soared relative to that of euro area partners that have experienced a slump in the depressed global economic climate following the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks in the US. During the five years 2001-05, Greek growth averaged 4.4% compared with 1.4% in the euro area. The economic platform of the New Democracy (ND) party in the March 2004 election campaign was predicated on rates of growth averaging 5% a year in real terms to 2008. However, this has been scaled back in the 2006 Stability and Growth Programme to 3.8% in 2006 (compared with a European Commission forecast of 2.1% for the euro area) and 3.8% again in 2007 (1.8%). The Economist Intelligence Unit, however, is less optimistic, and forecasts rates of 3.5% and 3.3% respectively.
